The Mem’s Servants:
A Food & Dance Affair
by Project Plait X Artistry
The year is 1921, and the tireless endeavour of building the British Empire is going at full steam. House 18 Temenggong Road, a typical Black-&-white house, was built to house a British serviceman and his family. Plumbing, gas stoves and electricity is not yet available in the house, and housekeeping is an arduous affair. Having servants in the home is absolutely vital to the comfort and prestige expected of the atas European community.

We unearth the untold stories from the back of the house- the servants, in particular the cookie (cook) and the amah (nanny), whose lives play out in close proximities to their European masters (known to the servants as Tuan & Mem, short for memsahib). Their paths, however, couldn’t be more different.
Housed in a Black-&-white colonial house restored to its former glory, our story comes alive through Food & Dance. A 5-dish modern Singaporean menu is interwoven with Contemporary Dance into a unique showcase by Chef Nixon Low and choreographer Naomi Tan. Experience the full beauty of this house originally built in the 1920s as you walk through and dine in each of the four interconnected rooms. Expect sensory enchantment as you are immersed in this interactive dining experience, and be part of a special journey that transcends time and space.
